WE GOT A DOG!!!

WE GOT A DOG a year and a 1/2 ago

Here's the story:

Occasionally I'll peruse the local animal shelter's website. I'm not sure why because while having a dog was always something we wanted to do in the future it's not something that we thought was going to happen anytime soon.

think again.

I found this guy:

I showed Chris. We both fell in love instantly. I thought it was great that he was 3-4 years old so I didn't have to housebreak him or deal with puppy stuff, yay! Soooooo we went to check him out.

our very first meeting at the shelter!

We took the kids and they were very excited. We couldn't find him at first but then asked someone and he took us to him. The guy there let us take him out of his cage. Chris had him on the leash and the kids got to pet him. He was very calm and interested in what was going on around him. We also learned that he wasn't 3-4 years old, but 3-4 MONTHS old..... there goes my no puppy perk! Before we left we impulsively put an application in for him. He already had another app in for him which made us sad. They typically wait a couple weeks or until 3 applications are in on a dog until they make a decision.

Part of the application asked about a fenced in yard (which we don't have) and kids (which we do have) and other pets (which we do have) I listed our cat who mostly lives outside/garage. They also asked for the cats vet info which I provided. We haven't taken our cat to the vet in years.....

We left the shelter hopeful but the more we thought and talked about it the more worried we became. We were already so invested in this dog. The thought of not getting him was heartbreaking.

We put in the application on a Saturday and the next Thursday (during a newborn session) I got a call that we were chosen to be his family! I can't tell you how giddy I was receiving that call! I called Chris and the kids right away, ran to target to grab a few necessities and met them at the shelter to pick up OUR DOG!!

10/11/12 --on our way home!

At the shelter his name was 'Smiley' because of the "smiling" he does when he greets people (which we later learned is a sign of submission). We quickly changed his name to Sergeant (and in Sgt. Pepper) and left Smiley as his middle name :)

renewal

I've missed documenting a lot over last few years. Things got busy. really busy. Blogs got unpopular. Facebook took over.

I'd like to get back to this space though. This is my journal of my children's early years and I need to keep it up! I'll go back and cover the important evens (this time for real) and then try to at least blog here weekly. That seems reasonable.

Birthdays 2012: 5 & 7

This year instead of a birthday party the kids opted to spend 2 night at Great Wolf Lodge. We had a blast!

The lobby always had fun things happening!

All around the hotel was an interactive wizard game. We resisted buying the gear you need to play but cracked eventually. I'm so glad we did because it was sooooo much fun!

The best part of course was the WATER PARK!

We can't wait to go back! Happy Birthday May & Cam!

Chicken Cat babies, Part 2

At about 6 weeks once they were eating dry food (mostly) we made Cameron's room the "cat room" and brought them inside. I had homes lined up for all of them.... one by one they got picked up! The black one went to a Friend of Jen Wesphal, the male gray one went to a friend of our neighbor Laurie and the female gray one went to Chris' cousin Amanda.

We were so sad to see them all go. I absolutely loved having the kittens around but they don't stay kittens forever!

Side note: At the same time we brought the kittens inside we had CC fixed. She did well and stayed in our bedroom for a few days after the surgery to recover. We debated keeping her inside but she was clearly wanting to be outside again. Once we lost all of our chickens (another blog post!) she left and we haven't seen her much since :(

Chicken cat babies, part 1

 CC (Chicken Cat)

The morning of May 18th 2012 I went out to let the chickens out of their coop as usual only to find CC (the stray kitten who has been living with our chickens for the last 6mo) laying at the entrance of the coop, which was usual. I thought maybe she was hurt but as soon as I opened the door she ran inside to her usual spot. Not 5 minutes later her first kitten was born (a black one!) I saw it happen and was in total shock. I was hoping because she was still a kitten herself her litter would be small and possibly only one.... not so! Soon after 2 more gray ones were born! The kids were very excited and intreged by it all. They watched at least one being born if not two (I can't remember!)

CC was a wonderful mama to them. They co-existed with the chickens for a few weeks and then CC moved them into the shed for a few days. After that they were back into the coop. CC was very good about letting me and the kids hold them (and take tons of pictures of them!)

 3 days old

The black one was female, and the gray ones were one of each!

to be cont......

a quick word

I still need to play catch up from last year AND add things from this year. Ugh. I believe I'm going to take a big step back from Facebook. It's a time warp for me and it's stealing valuable time from me & my family. I do hope to be more active here though. This is worth the time much more so because I can come back and  reminisce, much like a journal.

Cameron Says: curse word edition

Cameron used to use bad words that were not really bad even though he thought they were.

blood
thief (pronounced FeeF)
Butt Hudge (a personal favorite)
**you are ckkuk** w/ hand motions (inside joke I want to remember)

Lately he's moved on to actual bad words
Shit is his favorite. Hands down.

But tonight he said this:

*putting PJs on*
"I almost said damnit" (as if he didn't just say it then lol)
I give him the look
"oh! is that a bad word?"
"Yes, Cameron it is"
"did you know that? the whole time?"

yep, I've known the whole time buddy.
